PARK PROGRESS UPDATES & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
JULY 20th, 2025
Hot temperatures prohibited much site work at the South Hull Neighborhood Park this week. I've developed quite a farmer's tan! But we are still on track to open with our first event in late August, and there were notable achievements:
The Montgomery Board of Adjustment approved our building permit for the gazebo which can be issued after August 21st. There is still a chance the gazebo will be built by the Neighbor Night Out on Thursday August 28, but it is more likely it will be September and well ahead of official opening ceremonies. Many thanks to Cheryl McKiearnan, Susie Paul. Mitzi Cole, Sarah Gay Edwards, Vinny and Maitri Chandrasoma, and Deb Perlan who came to support the project.
Thanks to Seventh District Council member Andrew Szymanski for awarding us $3000 from the City. The funds are earmarked primarily for a perimeter pole fence to guard against erosion and limit access to one entrance, fall plantings of shrubs, trees, bulbs, grass sodding/seeding, raised beds for the children's gardens. Warmest thanks to Vinny Chandrasoma who made contact with the councilman and followed through! He answered right-away and with much appreciated enthusiasm.
This week's Shout-Outs:
Many Thanks To
Vinny for her gracious help securing the new City funds. And, of course, our deep gratitude to Andrew Szymanski for his kind responsiveness to our neighborhood. And thank you to all who turned out to support our Park. It makes a difference.
Joseph James for watching over the Park with daily checks, watering, and rewinding the hose I hopelessly tangle!
Libbi for installing those three elegant benches.
Thunder Harding for a great job mowing and trimming the park. He is Kip and Mona Lisa's son and is starting a lawn care service. His rates are reasonable. His number is 334-910-9454.
Super thanks to Deb Perlan for braving the heat and cleaning the storm drains and street and for her donation of gardening equipment.
THE COMING WEEK
Cheryl Lang and I will be raking Monday morning July 21. I'll be there about 7:30. Hope to finish this task this week, so will be on site some evenings and will let you know!
Flower beds final prep with Cheryl McKiearnan's help. Cheryl is also helping prepare a list of fall plantings. Spring will be glorious!
Donated and purchased benches and tables assembled. Thunder Harding is helping with this. The equipment will be installed at the park as soon as sitework is finished.
Repair cracks in driveway.
Fill gap at the end of east fence line. I have plyboard in my garage if someone can cut it for me.
Organize volunteer crew to build pole fence.
Finalize contractor for building gazebo.
